Setup and fit
What an open-laptop riser changes at a desk
An open-laptop riser carries the computer's base while leaving its display open. The stand can raise the screen above the desk, but the result depends on the stand's shape and the laptop's own thickness. A product-page height measurement usually describes the frame, not the exact number of inches the display will move upward.
Decide whether the attached keyboard still works for you
When a laptop sits higher or tilts, the built-in keyboard and touchpad move with it. That can be fine when the computer is used occasionally or when typing is light. If you type for long blocks, plan where a separate keyboard and pointing device will go before choosing a tall riser. A shelf beneath the stand may provide storage when the keyboard is not in use; it does not mean the keyboard is included.
Look at the support points
Check the model's stated compatibility and compare it with your laptop's footprint, feet, vents and case. Some open risers support the chassis on two narrow rails; others use a broad plate. Do not assume that the screen-size label alone answers whether the computer's base rests securely. A maximum load, if published, should be read alongside the physical dimensions and the manufacturer's setup instructions.
Keep the ergonomic claim modest
Raising a display can make it easier to place the screen nearer the sightline you prefer, but a stand cannot decide a correct viewing position for every person. Desk height, chair height, the laptop screen, keyboard distance and task all contribute. Compare the actual screen position and input-device placement in your room; do not treat a product's “ergonomic” label as a personalized fit assessment.
Check cooling statements against the evidence
Open space below a laptop may leave room for air to move, and some manufacturers describe their materials as heat sinks. Neither observation proves a temperature improvement for all computers. The laptop's vents, fans, workload and room conditions matter. If heat is the reason you are shopping, look for an independent test of the exact laptop-and-stand arrangement rather than extrapolating from a material description.

Forty-four reviewed current-reference arrangements document a changeable support height or position. Desk plus essential height adjustment returns 44 exact matches; travel plus essential height returns 37. The Targus AWU100005GL is the pertinent desk-plus-height and travel-plus-height example: its documented fold and five positions satisfy both filters, but its rise span and packed bag envelope are not published. The amounts are not interchangeable: StarTech ADJ-LAPTOP-RISER lists a 1.3–4.7-inch stand adjustment and instructs users to remove the laptop before adjustment; Kensington K50406WW lists seven positions from 57 to 148 mm; DURABLE FOLD has six steps for 10–15-inch devices up to 5 kg. Such figures describe the makers' support mechanisms, not the exact screen rise on every computer. Check the chassis support, operating instructions and numeric limitations in the exact model assessment.
A claimed feature can describe something other than working-height adjustment. The Mobile Pixels Vertical Laptop Stand changes its closed-laptop cradle opening from 16 to 40 mm; this is slot width, not open-screen lift. Its Laptop/Monitor Riser is a fixed shelf with a 23.2 × 9 × 3.2 in overall-size statement and no selectable height. A fixed six-inch Lamicall LN05 lift, a fixed angle or a closed-laptop storage slot also does not satisfy an essential height-adjustment requirement. By contrast, a mechanism without a published numerical span—such as Native Union Desk or Lamicall STDL09—can still be described as adjustable, but the missing range remains a purchase check.
Find products with essential height adjustment. Keep the place condition too where it applies: desk plus height adjustment returns 44 arrangements, while travel plus height adjustment returns 37. With earlier editions included, earlier plus height adjustment returns 54. Height adjustment plus essential swivel returns five exact matches; use height plus swivel to keep both conditions.
Look for rotation at the base
Browse model assessments referenced by this answer
Seven current-reference arrangements document a swivel function. It is distinct from changing a laptop's tilt, lifting its rear edge or repositioning a monitor arm. Humanscale L6 has a 360-degree rotating base and separately specified clutch-hinge movement; Aluratek AULS03F documents a 360-degree base; Nulaxy LS18 combines a rotating base with a telescoping column but instructs users to remove the computer before changing its height or tilt. Check the exact rotation mechanism and stability instructions rather than treating any moving joint as swivel.
Neither Mobile Pixels page describes laptop rotation on a base. Its Vertical Laptop Stand's 16–40 mm selector is cradle-slot width; the Laptop/Monitor Riser is a fixed shelf with a hub. Neither function is swivel. Find arrangements with an essential swivel base; the desk-only combination has seven matches at desk plus swivel. If screen-height adjustment is also required, use the same swivel condition with height adjustment, which returns five.

Earlier = Yes plus essential height adjustment returns 54 exact matches: 44 current-reference and ten earlier. Among the earlier examples, Kensington K50424WW is a continuously adjustable desk riser, while Targus AWE15US has four vertical-position settings without a published numeric rise. The non-adhesive MOFT MS002 documents selected 2- or 3-inch positions, subject to its named laptop/foot exclusions. These product-specific claims are not a shared adjustment range. Earlier = Yes does not turn either Mobile Pixels desk model into an adjustable stand: their lifecycle is current-reference, and their product pages do not describe height settings or a rotating base.
The set also includes fixed and angle-only products elsewhere in the catalogue, but they do not meet this essential condition. For example, Lenovo 2-in-1's ten settings from 0 to 54 degrees describe tilt, not a separate height selector. Find height-adjustable arrangements with earlier models included.

Earlier = Yes plus essential swivel returns eight exact matches. The Targus PA241U adds one earlier example: its exact model source documents a 360-degree laptop pivot. Its raised rear edge does not establish a selectable height range. Other older Targus arrangements use different mechanisms; a tray angle or unfolding support is not the same as rotation at the laptop base. Earlier classification also does not imply present availability. Both Mobile Pixels supports remain non-swiveling current-reference arrangements even when Earlier = Yes is selected.
Find swivel arrangements with earlier models included. The same Earlier = Yes selection alone does not create a swivel function for a model whose page does not document one.
Travel plus swivel
Travel plus essential swivel returns three exact matches. The Mobile Pixels cradle and shelf are desk-only in their reviewed documentation: neither has a stated folding mode or swivel base, so neither meets travel plus swivel. The three matches document both a folding or carryable form and rotation at the base: Aluratek AULS03F, Lamicall STDL04 and Nulaxy LS18. AULS03F's folded dimensions are not published; Lamicall's rotation and fold do not establish a bag envelope; Nulaxy specifies removal of the laptop before changing its height or tilt. The combined result is about two documented features, not a promise that the whole setup fits a particular bag.
