A useful fit for

A laptop owner who needs a support explicitly documented for both lap and desk use and can verify the exact size configuration against the laptop chassis.

The main tradeoff

The product page's size menu does not map unambiguously to every specification block, one published width has an inconsistent paired metric value, and the official variant weights conflict with the page's size-specific weights. No individualized fit, comfort, temperature, stability, height-adjustment, folding or swivel evidence is established.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does Rain Design explicitly intend the iLap for lap use, or is it a desk stand being repurposed?

Rain Design names both lap and desk use for iLap, describes a hinged cushioned support and says the front cushion detaches when switching to desk work. The back cushion remains attached in either arrangement. This supports a documented lap-use match, but it is not an individualized fit, comfort or safety test.

Which iLap size should I choose for my laptop?

The option data lists 12-inch SKU 10022, 13–14-inch 10023, 14-inch 10024, 15-inch 10025 and 17-inch 10027. The product page's four dimension blocks are labelled 13, 14, 15 and 17 inches and do not clearly map all five options one-to-one. Rain Design specifically says the 15-inch iLap fits a 16-inch MacBook Pro because its footprint is close; verify the actual laptop width, depth, feet and case before generalizing that example.

Do the removable cushions make the iLap fold for travel?

No folding-for-packing mode is documented. Rain Design says the front cushion can be removed for portability and desk use, but clarifies that the rear cushion is not detachable and should remain for either use. Because the travel question requires the stand itself to fold, an unverified hinge or removable cushion is not enough to satisfy that essential condition.

Rain Design's iLap belongs to a different category from a desktop riser that is simply moved onto a couch: the company explicitly presents it for both lap and desk use. Its hinged aluminum support sits over padded cushions, and the front cushion can be removed when switching to desk work. That documented two-surface purpose is the iLap's defining advantage; whether it fits a particular person's laptop, lap or sitting position still needs a practical fit check.

A cushioned support for two distinct setups

The maker describes soft foam cushions and an aluminum base, with a hinge that lets the computer sit at different positions. Its FAQ clarifies how to change surfaces: the front cushion detaches for desk use, but the rear cushion does not detach and should remain for either arrangement. This is not a generic padded tray whose lap suitability must be inferred from a photograph. It is also not a complete workstation; the laptop stays open, and typing remains on its built-in keyboard unless a separate input device is added.

That difference matters when comparing the iLap with Rain Design's fixed open-laptop risers. The mStand and mBar are described as desktop products; the iLap is the one Rain Design explicitly names for both lap and desk placement. Its soft supports may make contact with a user's legs less direct than a bare metal stand, but the manufacturer has not published independent stability, comfort, posture or temperature testing. Its “keeps your lap cool” and heat-sink descriptions are design claims, not measured thermal outcomes for a particular laptop or workload.

Choose by chassis, not just the display diagonal

The US-facing product menu lists five iLap stand choices: 12-inch SKU 10022, 13–14-inch 10023, 14-inch 10024, 15-inch 10025 and 17-inch 10027. The product page's specification section separately names 13-, 14-, 15- and 17-inch models, with a 2.5-inch height for each. It lists 12.8 by 8.9 inches for the 13-inch block, 12.5 by 10 inches for the 14-inch block, 14.1 by 9.6 inches for the 15-inch block, and 15.4 by 10.2 inches for the 17-inch block. The page does not clearly map every listed size option to every specification block, and the 15-inch width's paired metric value does not convert cleanly. Keep those discrepancies visible rather than assuming that an option label is a precise chassis limit.

Rain Design says the 15-inch iLap fits the 16-inch MacBook Pro because the laptop's footprint is close to that of a 15-inch model. Treat that as the manufacturer's stated compatibility for that example, not a device-by-device fit test. Before choosing any size, compare your closed laptop's actual width and depth, the areas that will contact the support, any case or protruding feet, and where the underside vents sit. The page's broad “fits all MacBooks” and “most notebooks” language is not a complete matrix for third-party chassis.

The pads detach; the stand is not documented as foldable

The product page says cushions are removable for portability, but its FAQ is more specific: only the front cushion is detachable, while the rear stays attached for either surface. That is useful for changing the desk arrangement and moving the padded product, but it is not evidence that the aluminum support folds down for packing. The stand has a fixed 2.5-inch listed height, with no height-adjustment range or swivel mechanism documented. A numeric stand height is not the same as the screen's final position, which depends on the computer and how it rests.

Weight is another field to treat cautiously. The product-page size specifications list weights from 1.3 to 1.6 pounds, while official variant data gives the same raw 2,495-gram weight for all five stand options. Those source fields do not reconcile, so this assessment does not use a verified carry-weight comparison. A single shared product photograph also does not establish the dimensions of every option.

Who should shortlist the iLap?

It is a sensible research candidate when lap support is essential and the shopper also values a documented desk mode. The detachable front cushion and the maker's explicit lap-and-desk instructions are meaningful differences, not merely cosmetic details. For an exclusively fixed desk setup, compare it with simpler risers and decide whether the cushion and dual-surface design are worth their space. For a travel requirement that specifically asks the stand to fold, use a product whose exact mechanism is documented to fold; the iLap's removable cushion does not meet that condition. It also does not replace a height-adjustable or swiveling base.

No hands-on fit or comfort test was performed for this assessment. Confirm the exact stand SKU, check the laptop's real footprint against the maker's size information, and verify which cushion pieces are included in the offered package. The primary evidence is Rain Design's current iLap product page and its official product option data; neither source establishes performance for every user or computer.
